Partial Hip Replacement Surgery

If you’ve fallen or been hurt and broken your hip as a result, you may need hip replacement surgery. Whether you need a partial or a total hip replacement to fix a damaged or diseased hip depends on what happened and how bad it is. Here at Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, our hip specialists are here to help you choose the right treatment path.

WHAT IS A PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT?

During a partial hip replacement, your doctor replaces the ball of your hip joint, but not the socket. Metal, ceramic, or plastic are used to make the artificial part. This kind of surgery is used to fix certain kinds of broken hips.

WHEN IS A PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT DONE?

Most of the time, a partial hip replacement is done to fix certain types of hip fractures. When the socket of the hip joint is healthy, this option can be used to make recovery easier and faster.

PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT VS. TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT

Patients who are good candidates for a partial hip replacement usually don’t have arthritis in the hip and have healthy cartilage in the acetabulum. This is usually the case for someone who broke their femur in a fall but didn’t have hip pain or arthritis before the accident.

Even if you don’t have osteoarthritis, your surgeon may decide that a total hip replacement is a better way to treat your broken hip than a partial hip replacement. There are many reasons for this.

Your doctor may also recommend a total hip replacement if you have other problems, such as a thin bone in the socket, a bone cyst in the femur or pelvis, or another fracture near your hip joint.

As with any orthopedic surgery, and especially a hip replacement, patients should talk to an experienced, board-certified orthopedic surgeon about both surgical and non-surgical options. Here at TOA, our hip specialists are ready to help you find your solution.

PARTIAL HIP REPLACEMENT RECOVERY

If you have surgery to replace the ball of your hip joint, you will probably need crutches or a walker to help you get around. You might be able to climb a few stairs and get in and out of bed and chairs. But until you have more energy and can move around better, you will need help at home.

You will take part in a rehab program, which you will start in the hospital. The better you participate in your physical therapy, the faster you get your strength and movement back. Most people can go back to work between four weeks and four months after surgery.
