What are the benefits of having your imaging done in-house?

Convenience.

It couldn’t be any easier! All CT imaging appointments can be made as soon as your physician orders your scan. With all of your appointments scheduled at a TOA facility, you avoid entering the hospital or other diagnostic facility.

Improved Communication.

Your physician will have immediate access to your images and your results. It streamlines the information and improves patient care.

Quality Imaging and Reads.

Each scan lasts approximately 30 seconds and most scan times are under 5 minutes. All scans are read by Abercrombie Radiology.

Modern Technology.

Using the most advanced imaging technology available, we can now offer 3-D reconstruction of scans. This technology allows physicians a unique view of your individual anatomy.

Please note: TOA offers CT scanning for low lumbar, elbow, hand, wrist, finger, thumb, knee, hip, pelvis, ankle, fore foot, and hind foot. All other scans, and scans with contrast, will be scheduled outside of TOA.

What to Expect During Your CT Scan

If your orthopedic provider recommends a CT scan, you can expect a quick and straightforward appointment. A CT scan, short for computed tomography, uses advanced X-ray technology to create highly detailed images of bones and joints. These images allow physicians to look more closely at areas that may not be fully visible on standard X-rays.

When you arrive for your CT scan at the TOA Parkwest location in Knoxville, a technologist will guide you through the process and help you get comfortably positioned on the scanning table. The table slowly moves through the scanner while the machine captures a series of images from multiple angles. The procedure is painless, and most patients find the process simple and stress-free.

One of the benefits of in-house imaging at Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance is how quickly your physician can access your results. Because the scan is performed at the same facility where you receive orthopedic care, your doctor can review the images sooner and discuss the next steps in your treatment plan without unnecessary delays.

Why CT Imaging Is Helpful for Orthopedic Diagnosis

Orthopedic specialists often rely on CT imaging when they need a clearer and more detailed view of bones and joints. CT scans are especially helpful for identifying complex fractures, joint damage, arthritis changes, or alignment problems that may require more detailed evaluation.

Modern CT scanners can also create three-dimensional images, giving physicians a more complete picture of the affected area. This level of detail helps doctors better understand how an injury or condition is affecting the joint or bone structure.

At Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, the ability to perform CT scans in the same office where patients see their orthopedic specialist adds convenience and improves coordination of care. Your physician can quickly review the results and determine the best treatment plan, whether that involves therapy, medication, or additional orthopedic care.

CT Scan Frequently Asked Questions

Why would my orthopedic doctor recommend a CT scan?

Your doctor may order a CT scan when more detailed imaging is needed to understand a problem affecting the bones or joints. CT scans are commonly used to evaluate fractures, joint injuries, arthritis, and certain spine conditions. They provide more detailed images than standard X-rays, which can help your physician make a more accurate diagnosis.

Is a CT scan uncomfortable?

No. A CT scan is a noninvasive and painless test. During the scan, you will lie on a table while the scanner takes images. Most patients simply need to remain still for a short time while the images are captured.

How long will my CT appointment take?

The scanning process itself is very quick. In many cases, the actual scan takes less than a minute, and the entire appointment usually lasts only a few minutes from start to finish.

When will my doctor receive the results?

Because CT scans are performed within the Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance facility, your physician can often access the images shortly after the scan is completed. The images are interpreted by Abercrombie Radiology, ensuring accurate readings that your physician can use to guide your care.

What areas of the body can be scanned at TOA?

CT scans at TOA are available for several orthopedic areas, including the low lumbar spine, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, pelvis, foot, and ankle. If imaging with contrast or other specialized scans is needed, your care team will coordinate those services with an outside imaging center.
