Discseel® Procedure

Chronic back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek orthopedic care. In many cases, the underlying cause is a damaged or torn spinal disc, which can lead to inflammation, nerve irritation, and long-lasting discomfort. At Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance (TOA), patients have access to advanced spine care and innovative treatments such as the Discseel® procedure, a minimally invasive option designed to repair damaged spinal discs and relieve chronic pain.

What Is the Discseel® Procedure?

Dr. Samuel Yoakum, DO, offers the Discseel® procedure, a modern, biologic treatment designed to address disc-related back pain. Instead of removing the disc or performing a spinal fusion, this innovative approach targets small tears in the outer layer of the spinal discs, known as annular tears, which can be a primary source of chronic pain. By focusing on repairing the disc itself, the Discseel® procedure provides a minimally invasive option for patients seeking long-term relief.

During the procedure, Dr. Yoakum will inject a biologic material called fibrin, a natural protein involved in the body’s healing process. The fibrin works to seal the damaged areas of the disc, allowing the tissue to stabilize and begin healing.

This minimally invasive approach is designed to restore disc function, reduce inflammation around spinal nerves, and improve mobility without traditional spine surgery.

Conditions the Discseel® Procedure May Treat

Disc damage can develop from aging, injuries, repetitive stress, or degenerative spine conditions. The Discseel® procedure may be considered for patients experiencing chronic pain related to conditions such as:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Sciatica or irritated nerves
  • Annular disc tears
  • Chronic lower back pain or neck pain

These problems can create persistent pain that interferes with work, exercise, and everyday activities.

Benefits of a Minimally Invasive Disc Repair Procedure

One reason Discseel® has gained attention among spine specialists is its focus on treating the source of disc pain rather than simply managing symptoms. Because the procedure is performed through small needle injections, many patients benefit from:

  • An outpatient treatment rather than major surgery
  • Faster recovery compared with spinal fusion procedures
  • Reduced tissue disruption
  • Gradual improvement as the disc heals over time

Studies have reported meaningful improvements in pain and function for many patients after treatment.
