Student Sports Physicals in East Tennessee

A sports health screening is required for a student athlete to compete in sports during the 2026-2027 year.

Sports physicals are often mandatory for students participating in sports activities or organizations. At Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, our board-certified sports medicine providers are dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of our eastern Tennessee student-athletes on and off the court.

The primary objective of a sports physical exam is to determine whether a student-athlete is physically fit and healthy enough to participate in their chosen sport. The physical evaluation aims to assess the student’s current fitness level and ensure that they can handle the physical demands of their sport without risking their health.

Apart from identifying injury risks, sports physicals can also detect underlying medical conditions that may not have presented any symptoms yet. Our board-certified sports medicine providers at Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance are dedicated to your student athlete’s overall health and well-being, ensuring they’re fit for the sports season and at low risk of injury or other health conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Student Sports Physicals

How early should my student athlete get a sports physical before the season starts?

It is recommended that student athletes complete their sports physical at least 6 to 8 weeks before the start of their season. This allows enough time to address any concerns, complete additional evaluations if needed, and ensure all required forms are submitted before participation deadlines.

Can a sports physical be used for multiple sports in the same school year?

In most cases, a sports physical completed for the school year can be used for multiple sports during that same academic year. However, requirements may vary by school or athletic organization. It is always best to confirm with your student’s school or athletic department to ensure compliance

What if my student athlete has a previous injury or surgery?

Students with prior injuries or surgeries can still complete a sports physical. Our providers will review medical history and evaluate recovery status to ensure safe participation. In some cases, additional clearance or recommendations may be provided to help prevent reinjury.

Will my student athlete receive clearance documentation the same day?

Yes. Once the evaluation is complete and no further testing is needed, clearance forms are typically completed during the same visit. This allows student athletes to submit required documentation promptly and avoid delays in participation.

Can sports physicals help prevent future injuries?

Yes. Sports physicals help identify strength imbalances, flexibility limitations, and other risk factors that may increase the likelihood of sports injury. Early identification allows providers to recommend preventive strategies, conditioning adjustments, or training modifications to help keep student athletes healthy and performing safely throughout the season.
